projections

Projection is a defense mechanism used to hide ourselves from the personal traits we are ashamed of. By projecting our suppressed attributes onto others, we are allowed a respite from ourselves and find temporary peace in forcing others, instead, to possess the unpleasant attributes we seek to bury. For centuries, artists have painted a brutally honest picture of these characteristics, showing them in all of their ugliness. This series of photographs exploits the denial of the projector by casting an artist’s depiction of the projector’s true attributes back onto their faces for all to see.
